We ran out of oil again and I am sitting here waiting for the delivery right now. I'm pissed because I called the oil company at 8:30 in the morning and they never delivered. I called at 5 to 5 and they were already gone, I got their answering service which means I could only get an emergency 10 gallons so I lowered the thermostats and went out for pizza so I wouldn't have to use any hot water and hoped that I would make it through the night with 4 big blankets on top of us and all the animals in bed. If it had happened at 4 am I might have just tried to stick it out, but it's too early in the night, I'm afraid that the pipes will freeze. The guy who does the emergency delivery just called and there was a lot of dead air on the line. From the last time he came we had the impression that he wasn't the sharpest tack in the box but tonight he sounded drunk. It was like he couldn't believe that I wanted oil at this hour, but that's his job - I don't get it.

When I lived in Roscoe, NY (Sullivan Co.) on top of a hill just outside of town, the winter there often made me feel as if I were on the dark side of the moon. We finally decided to get a woodstove--an Earth Stove--and along with an ample supply of wood and a couple of strategically placed circulation fans, we rarely had to turn on the heating system. It paid for itself within a year, plus we got the added benefit of exercise when we chopped the wood and hauled it down from the barn, and we no longer had to rely on OILCO to survive the winter. If anything, it made the house too warm! Plus the taste of spaghetti sauce, soup, or stew slow-cooked atop a woodstove is truly something wonderful.I really like your design for your blog--it's lovely. I'm visiting because you commented on my dearly beloved's blog, Puppet Press Journal, and I was looking over his should and loved the chicken!
Dear Christy,If this anywhere near happens again, throw some blankets in the car and come over to our house. We have gas heat, and it doesn't stop. You'd be welcome to share our heat and warm us up for a few blustery days with your presence!
We have two woodstoves, but one has a bad chimney that backs up and the other is cracked and inefficient - makes a lot of mess and little heat. I did have the idea last night that we could buy a new stove for the good chimney and take it with us when we move. Oil is $1.62 a gallon right now.I might have left and gone to LI last night, which is where Steve is, but Aidan slept through the whole thing - so I didn't want to mess with that, plus, I didn't want the pipes to freeze.
Oh and thanks for the design compliment! I needed that - I've been trying to redesign my web design website and feeling like a lousy designer.
