The Mirror Project rejected my photo, apparently it has to be a self portrait. I didn't think they'd buy that that's MY reflection in the bowl.
Been too busy to blog: making sauce and salsa with 70 pounds of ripe tomatoes that the farmers left unexpectedly at our back door, going apple picking, excavating the cement walkway to our front door, buying a new (old) front door at a salvage/antique place that was like Monsters Inc. with all the freakin' doors, installing a new external hard drive, laundry, cooking, dishes etc.
I'm reading Protecting the Gift and I highly recommend it to all parents. I got it from the library, you probably can too.
I had to take Aidan to the dentist today for a pulpectomy - a root canal for kids. We have had one visit already with this pediatric dentist, who looks just like Willem DaFoe. He didn't want me in the room with them, so I sat fuming in the waiting room. I did some assertiveness personal training in the meanwhile and went in today insisting that I be in the room with Aidan. Dr. Dafoe said that it tends to make kids nervous and if that's happening I will need to leave. I told him I would be the judge of that. It went great and I feel so good. I have a really hard time standing my ground like that. I've been talking to a lot of parents about this and apparently it is very common for dentists to do this, even with kids younger than Aidan. I find it mindblowing that these dentists expect parents to leave a young child alone with strangers for a long, uncomfortable and possibly painful procedure.
Especially with Willem Dafoe.
That's all for now.

Spike's front tooth broke in half when he was about 2 1/2 years old. It was a nightmare - and finding a dentist I trusted to do the work to fix it seemed like it was going to be impossible. Luckily a woman overheard me ranting about my problem in a local bakery and gave me the name of a dentist that she took her children to. This dentist not only let me stay in the room with Spike, he actually had me hold him in my lap while he did it. It was still a totally traumatic and awful - but I was so happy that Ryan and I could both be there and that the dentist respected our feelings.
How did your garden turn out, by the way? Did you manage to grow any sunflowers?
jake has tons of horrible tooth trauma at age 4 (pulling, major cavities). it was awful, but the dentist always let me be in the room. when i was a child, the dentist i went to wouldn't allow parents in the room and he used to slap me when i cried when getting cavities filled. listen to your gut! protecting the gift is a great book.
no - I grew no sunflowers and my garden is a heartbreaking mess of weeds - I had actually put a lot of work into laying out newspaper and then covering it with hay - then the farmers came and we dug a little hole to see what the soil was like - and there was no topsoil - just shale - they were afraid it would break their tiller. So then I set about trying to add enough topsoil. We bought two pickup trucks full and it still wasn't enough, so I pretty much gave up - we just didn't have enough money for any more soil. The topsoil that we did put down has nurtured the most magnificent weed garden. I have all of the seed that I bought in the refrigerator and a vision for next year...
Oh my god that is so horrifying. That was part of why I wanted to be there, to make sure that Aidan was treated respectfully - I never imagined a dentist would do something like that though. Incredible.
That photo is amazing! I've heard that dentists now have video games for kids to play while they're being worked on. Back in my day we had to rely on good ol'nitrous oxide and a healthy imagination.
i just love this photo! the golden fuzz of his head, the rosy cheeks, the sweet chubby arms and the peas spread out at his feet.
